When a new role opens up, many hiring managers instinctively reach out to multiple agencies. The logic is simple: the more people searching, the higher the chance of finding the right person quickly.
Recruitment does not always work that way. In fact, the decision to use multiple agencies versus partnering exclusively with one can completely change the quality of the hire, the experience of the process, and the outcome for your business.
There is a place for every type of recruitment partnership however the key is in understanding how each one actually works behind the scenes so you can make an informed decision about what is best for you.
The traditional agency model is built on speed and volume. Recruiters are measured on how many roles they fill and how quickly they do it. When several agencies are briefed on the same role, it often becomes a race to get CVs in front of you first.
At first glance, this might seem like a good thing. But here is what often happens behind the scenes:
Agencies prioritise the roles they believe they can fill quickly and easily.
It becomes more about "closing the deal", then taking the time to go to market and conducting a full search for the right candidate.
The focus becomes speed over depth, presenting CVs fast rather than truly assessing the best fit.
That does not mean multi-agency recruitment never works. It can work well for straightforward, volume based roles or when speed is the only priority. However, for strategic hires or roles where culture, team fit and long term impact matter, the process will fall short.
An exclusive partnership completely changes the dynamic. When one recruiter is trusted to manage the process from start to finish, they can shift their focus from speed to strategy.
With exclusivity, the recruiter has the time and space to:
Gain a deep understanding of your business, culture and what success looks like in the role and for your business.
Build a tailored search strategy that includes both active candidates and passive talent.
Proactively approach individuals who might not be on the market but are open to the right opportunity.
Manage candidate experience more carefully, presenting your business consistently and professionally.
The result is a more thorough process, a stronger shortlist and a higher chance of making the right long term hire.
There is another part of this conversation that often gets overlooked: the impact on your employer brand.
When multiple agencies are representing your business at once, you lose control over how your story is told. Each recruiter will write their own version of the job ad, each will pitch your company slightly differently and each will present a different view of your culture. The result is a diluted and sometimes inconsistent message.
This does not just confuse candidates. It can actually damage how your business is perceived in the market.
A few years ago, this may not have mattered as much. But today, candidates are doing far more research before they apply or accept an offer. They are checking Glassdoor, reading Google reviews and searching Reddit to see what people are saying about potential employers. They are piecing together every piece of information they can find.
If the messages they see online and the stories they hear from different recruiters do not align, it can raise questions about authenticity, stability and trust.
An exclusive partnership allows you to control that narrative. The recruiter can accurately represent your employer value proposition, keep messaging consistent and become a true extension of your brand. That consistency helps build credibility and trust and in today’s market, that can make the difference between a candidate applying or walking away.
One of the most common misconceptions is that working exclusively is more expensive. In reality, you will usually pay a similar fee whether you run a multi agency campaign or an exclusive one. Also most recruiters will be open, within reason to negotiate on price for an exclusive role so it can be a more robust and cost effective route to take.
The difference is in the process.
If you are going to invest the same budget into filling a role, it makes sense to ensure that investment is delivering the best possible outcome rather than simply the fastest.
Recruitment is evolving. Alongside large, traditional agencies, a growing number of boutique consultancies, micro RPOs and specialist recruiters are approaching the market differently.
Many of these smaller, agile setups only work on an exclusive basis. They prioritise depth, partnership and delivery over volume. They build their reputation on outcomes, not on how many CVs they can send. They are proving that this approach consistently delivers results.
This shift gives SMEs more choice than ever before. It is no longer a question of whether you use a recruiter, but how you work with them.
There is no one size fits all answer. Multi agency recruitment still has its place. It can be the right choice when speed is more important than precision or when the role is low risk and straightforward to fill.
But if the hire is strategic, if culture fit matters, or if the cost of getting it wrong is high, it is worth thinking about the process behind the search.
Working exclusively gives your recruiter the time, incentive and space to deliver the best possible result. It creates accountability and partnership and it transforms recruitment from a race into a considered, strategic search.
Recruitment has always been about finding the right person but how you approach the process can dramatically change the quality of that outcome.
Before briefing multiple agencies on your next hire, pause and think about what you are really trying to achieve. If the goal is simply to fill a vacancy, speed may win but if the goal is to build a team that will shape the future of your business, a deeper, more strategic partnership might deliver far more than you expect and at a better price point.
It's a win win in my book.
